A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after concerns were raised about a nursery in Blackwood.

Gwent Police said the arrests followed a referral from a council over health and safety issues linked to the nursery on Bridge Street.

The arrests

Those detained are a 49-year-old man from Cardiff and a 29-year-old woman from the Caerphilly area.

When the force shared the update, it said both were being held in police custody.

Officers on Bridge Street

Detectives are carrying out enquiries at the nursery itself. People living and working nearby have been told to expect more officers in the area while that work continues.

Gwent Police said it is working alongside partner agencies on the case.

What the police said

Detective Inspector Gavin Wilkes acknowledged the impact the news may have locally. He said: “We understand that allegations of this nature are upsetting and working with partner agencies, we are conducting a thorough investigation.”

He also addressed the posts already being shared online about the case: “We are aware of social media posts circulating and while we understand the public interest in this case, we urge people not to speculate or post anything online that could impact the investigation.”

Information appeal

The force is asking anyone who may be able to help to get in touch with officers directly rather than sharing information online.

DI Wilkes added: “If you have any information that you think might help our investigation, please come forward to report to us directly.”

Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers Wales by calling 0800 555 111 or through the Crimestoppers website.
