A council energy project at Ysgol Nantgwyn and a Merthyr Tydfil charity that employs disabled and visually impaired people are among five local organisations sharing more than £1.37 million in Welsh Government funding to bring down their energy bills.
The money comes from the third round of Ynni Cymru, which is splitting £8.27 million between 24 organisations across Wales. The aim is for schools, charities, community groups and businesses to spend less on power and put more back into the people and services they support.
Where the money is going
The five recipients in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil are:
- Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, for an education and community energy project at Ysgol Nantgwyn
- A Strings Limited in Treforest, a specialist retailer
- Cambrian Village Trust LTD in Clydach Vale, a community organisation that supports local people and activities
- The Merthyr Tydfil Institute For The Blind, a Merthyr Tydfil charity and employer of disabled and visually impaired people
- Business in Focus Limited in Dowlais, a social enterprise helping local businesses and entrepreneurs
Solar and heat pumps for Merthyr charity
The Merthyr Tydfil Institute For The Blind has been given £388,840, which will pay for solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps and electric vehicle charging points.
The charity has 52 staff, and more than three-quarters of them live with disabilities, visual impairments or other barriers to work. The savings on its energy bills could be enough to cover the cost of one more full-time member of staff, helping to support jobs and the organisation’s work in the years ahead.
About Ynni Cymru
The Welsh Government scheme helps communities, businesses and public services produce and use their own clean energy, backing projects that generate renewable power, lower bills and benefit their area.
More than 80 projects have been supported since it began in 2023, and this latest round takes total investment through the programme past £31 million.
