Cloned plate vehicle stopped in Mathern after M48 sighting

A 26-year-old man from the Abergavenny area has been reported to court after police stopped a vehicle with a cloned registration plate in Mathern over the weekend.

Officers from Gwent Police’s Roads Policing & Specialist Operations Team spotted the vehicle on the M48 heading towards Chepstow. Storm Austen did little to slow them down.

Blocked in

Several officers were already nearby and moved in to stop it. When the vehicle turned into a car park in Mathern, the handler of police dog Rizzo blocked it in and the driver was detained.

What the checks showed

Officers then ran checks on police systems. The force said these showed the cloned plate had been used to cover up the fact that the driver had no insurance.

Reported to court

The man has been reported to court for:

  • No insurance
  • Fraudulent use of a registration mark

The vehicle was seized.
