A mother has lodged an official complaint with Asda after a seasonal display unit loaded with books toppled onto her two year old daughter at the supermarket’s Blackwood store.
Little Oakleigh-Rose was left with a bruise on her face following the incident on Thursday, and the retailer says it is now looking into what happened, including going through CCTV footage.
A shopping trip for Children in Need
Jasmine Sale, a 27 year old full-time mum from Caerphilly, had taken her four children to the store to pick out Pudsey outfits ahead of Children in Need.
According to Jasmine, the family were walking past the display when it gave way and came down on top of the toddler. One of the books worked loose and struck the youngster on the cheek.
Recalling the moment, she said: “As we’ve gone to walk past the display it’s just given way and just fell on top of her. One of the books came loose and hit her in the cheek, which has left her with a nasty bruise on her face.”
Jasmine was standing behind her daughter at the time with her baby in her arms. She fears things could have been far more serious had the unit landed on the pram.
Concerns about what happened next
Jasmine says no member of staff came over to help at first, and that a member of the public had to go and fetch an employee.
She claims that when a worker did arrive, she was told the display had been leaning over all morning.
Asda’s response
The supermarket has confirmed it is investigating after the complaint was made. A spokesman for Asda said: “We understand how upsetting this must have been for Ms Sale and her daughter. Our store team gave first aid at the time and recorded the incident in line with our processes.
“We want every family to have a positive experience in our stores and we are sorry that wasn’t the case on this occasion.
“We’re in direct contact with Ms Sale and are looking into what happened, including reviewing CCTV, and we’ll keep her updated throughout.”
Jasmine, however, says she has yet to hear anything from the supermarket since the incident.
