Charity box thief jailed after stealing from Greggs

A thief who stole a charity box from Greggs has been jailed for six months.

Calum Edwards, 35, of no fixed abode in Newport, pleaded guilty to the theft at one of the bakery chain’s shops in the city on 29 October.

It isn’t known how much money was inside the charity box, Newport Magistrates’ Court was told.

The defendant also admitted stealing the following items from Tesco in Newport:

• Nine packets of bacon worth £35 on 1 October
• Health and beauty items valued at £24.25 on 23 October
• Four diffusers worth £24 on 4 November
• Two jars of coffee valued at £17.60 on 18 November
• Fairy scent boosters worth £26.20 on 21 November

Edwards was jailed for six months and ordered to pay compensation.

He has previous convictions for similar offences.
