A 28-year-old who was found handling an electric bike stolen from Gwent Police has been sent to prison.

Sam Wade, of Cocker Avenue in Cwmbran, had already pleaded guilty when he returned to Newport Magistrates’ Court to be sentenced.

The offences

Wade committed both crimes on October 1. He admitted:

  • Handling a stolen electric bike, which belonged to Gwent Police
  • Stealing cider and a pack of Stella Artois lager from Premier Stores in Cwmbran, with the drink valued at £20

Already on recall

When the case came before the court, Wade was already serving a 56-day recall. The court heard he had shown a “flagrant disregard for court orders”.

Because of the recall, the usual presumption that a prison sentence should be suspended did not apply in his case.

Costs and compensation

Wade was also ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs and £20 in compensation.

Huw Williams prosecuted the case, and Mitchell Woodman represented Wade.
