A shop in Newport city centre has been shut for three months after police and Trading Standards found thousands of illegal cigarettes during a joint day of action.

Neighbourhood officers from Newport Central worked alongside Newport City Council’s Trading Standards team as part of Op Machinize, a partnership operation targeting illegal activity in the city centre.

What was found

The day ended with:

  • 12,920 illegal cigarettes seized
  • 4.5kg of hand-rolled tobacco taken away
  • A three-month shop closure granted by the court

Working together

Gwent Police said the joint effort was about tackling crime and disrupting illegal trading in the heart of Newport.

How to report concerns

Anyone worried about a business in their area is being urged to speak to their local neighbourhood policing team or report it directly to Trading Standards.
