Man spared jail for killing pigeon at Newport centre

A Newport man has received a suspended prison sentence after admitting he killed a wild bird in front of members of the public at Friars Walk shopping centre.

Leigh Dixon, 44, of Ribble Walk, Bettws, pleaded guilty at Newport Magistrates’ Court to two charges arising from incidents on Friday, April 17.

The offences

Dixon admitted killing a non-Schedule 1 wild bird at the shopping centre – an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

He also pleaded guilty to a public order offence committed in Newport on the same date.

Sentence

Magistrates imposed a 22-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Dixon was ordered to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement and is subject to a 90-day alcohol abstinence and monitoring requirement.

He must also pay £85 in costs.
