Reform UK has secured its first-ever by-election victory in Wales, with Stuart Keyte winning the Trevethin and Penygarn seat on Torfaen Borough Council by a margin of nearly 200 votes.

The results showed a decisive win for Reform UK: Stuart Keyte (Reform UK) – 457 Toniann Phillips (Welsh Labour) – 259 Catherine Howells (Independent) – 117 Louise Sheppard (Independent) – 114 Tony Clark (Plaid) – 25

“I am truly honoured and humbled by the faith the people of Trevethin and Penygarn have placed in me tonight. This is a strong community full of good people, but like so many across the valleys of South Wales, we have been let down for far too long by a tired and out-of-touch Labour government,” said newly-elected Councillor Keyte.

“While families struggle to put food on the table, pay their council tax, or simply keep warm, this government is too busy being a circus of chaos. Well, the people of Trevethin and Penygarn have spoken loud and clear tonight. Enough is enough. For too long, people here have been left without a voice. That changes right now.”

Reform UK’s spokesperson hailed it as a “big win”, stating: “Labour has taken Wales for granted for too long. People want real change, and Reform UK is proving on the ground that we are the alternative. With every win, we show that our message is clear we will deliver the change Wales needs.”

Councillor David Thomas, Reform UK Group Leader in Torfaen, welcomed the victory: “Stuart has proven himself to the people of Trevethin and Penygarn, and the result reflects that. As Group Leader for Reform UK in Torfaen, it’s a real honour to welcome our newest councillor.”

Labour maintains control of the council with a majority of 12, while Reform UK’s presence grows to four councillors. The turnout was 24.7% with 973 votes cast and one spoilt ballot.
