Accessibility statement

A site for everyone

We want everyone to be able to read and use Wales Updates, whatever device or technology they use. Here’s what you can change, what the site does for you, what we know isn’t right yet and how to tell us about a problem.

Make the site work for you

Press Accessibility, at the bottom of every page, to change how the site looks. Changes apply straight away, and are remembered on this device.

  • Text size Makes the text of stories and pages larger, in two steps.
  • High contrast Darker text on light backgrounds, and brighter text in the footer.
  • Underline links Makes links easier to spot in text.
  • Reduce motion Turns off animations and sliding effects.

Your device’s own settings

  • Reduce motion If your device is set to reduce motion, the site does too, without you changing anything here.
  • Reduce transparency If your device is set to reduce transparency, see-through panels, such as the bar along the bottom of the screen on phones, are solid instead.
  • Zoom Zoom in and the page rearranges itself to fit, the way it does on a phone, so you don’t have to scroll sideways to read.

Getting around

  • Skip to content The first link on every page jumps past the menus, straight to the story or page.
  • With a keyboard Move around with the Tab key, and wherever you are is clearly outlined. Escape closes menus, search and pop-ups and takes you back to where you were, and pressing / jumps to search.
  • With a screen reader Pages are built with headings and landmarks to move between, and buttons that show only an icon carry a label for screen readers.

How accessible the site is

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We haven’t had the site formally tested yet.

We don’t yet have a list of known problems. If something doesn’t work for you, please tell us so we can fix it.

Some content comes from elsewhere, such as videos and posts from other sites shown in stories, or adverts. We can’t always control how accessible it is.

Tell us about a problem

If you find something on the site hard to use, or need a story in a different format, tell us through our contact form. Please say which page, what you were trying to do, and the device and any software you use, such as a screen reader.

We’ll reply within 2 working days, and fix what we can.

Not happy with our response?

If you’re not happy with how we respond, you can make a complaint. Our complaints policy says how. You can also get free advice from the Equality Advisory and Support Service.
