A 19-year-old has been locked up after he rode a Sur-Ron electric bike dangerously through the streets of Newport – while already subject to a suspended prison sentence for a near-identical offence.

Callum Lewis, of Marlborough Road, Newport, appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court where he admitted dangerous riding through Glebelands and Marlborough Road on June 17 last year.

Previous conviction

The court heard Lewis was already serving the operational period of a suspended sentence at the time. That earlier case involved dangerous driving of a Ford EcoSport through Newport’s streets on November 2, 2024, for which he received an 18-week custodial term suspended for 12 months.

Sentencing

Dave Thomas, prosecuting, outlined the facts of the new offence to magistrates.

Lewis was handed a 28-week sentence at a young offender institution. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months, with the ban beginning from the date of his release from custody.

The teenager was ordered to pay £85 in costs.
