Newport mother fined for children’s school absences

A woman from Newport has been hit with a bill of £284 after admitting her children were regularly missing school.

The offence

The mother – who cannot be identified for legal reasons – pleaded guilty to being a parent of a child who failed to attend school on a regular basis. The absences took place during the autumn and winter terms of 2024.

The outcome

Newport Magistrates’ Court handed down a £60 fine alongside £200 in costs and a £24 surcharge. The prosecution was brought by Newport City Council.
