A 78-year-old man from Abergavenny will spend more than 17 years in prison after admitting to raping and sexually abusing a girl.

Daniel Hickey, of St Teilo’s Road, was given a sentence of 17 years and six months when he appeared at Cardiff Crown Court.

What he admitted

The court was told the abuse happened repeatedly, two decades ago. Hickey pleaded guilty to:

  • rape of a child under 16
  • assault of a girl under 13 by penetration
  • engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15
  • engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 15
  • causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity

Further orders

As well as the prison term, Hickey will remain on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

A restraining order was also made. It bans him from approaching, contacting or communicating with the victim, whether directly or indirectly.

He is also barred from posting any material online that refers to her, either openly or by inference.

Under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the victim is entitled to anonymity for life.

Gwent Police did not have a mugshot of Hickey when asked for one.
