A man who subjected his partner to more than a year of controlling abuse has been jailed for four years and five months. During that time he strangled her until she lost consciousness in a Llandudno hotel room.

Matthew Green, 34, of Pen y Bryn Road, Colwyn Bay, was sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court. Her Honour Judge Nicola Jones described him as “obsessively jealous”.

Green was convicted of:

  • Coercive and controlling behaviour
  • Intentional strangulation
  • Criminal damage
  • Breaching a Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO)

The hotel attack

The pair had been in a relationship since 2024. On November 24 last year, they went to a hotel in Llandudno, where Green strangled her. The court heard she was unable to breathe and lost consciousness.

When she came round, Green told her she had suffered a seizure.

The judge spoke directly to Green about that night. She said: “You were quite alarmed. You could have killed her on that occasion.”

A pattern of control

The coercive and controlling behaviour charge covered the period from February 13, 2025 to July 10 this year. During that time, Green:

  • Sent her a message threatening to kill her
  • Made her hand over around £1,000, money the judge said was “no doubt to fund his cocaine addiction”
  • Held a knife to his own neck to cut himself after she spoke to a man at a nightclub, causing her “intense distress”

The judge told the court: “She has been punched on the nose so many times her nose is crooked.”

Separately, this summer Green smashed a window of a Tesla car belonging to the woman’s parents.

Defence arguments

Elen Owen, defending, said her client accepts responsibility for what he did and had a chaotic and difficult childhood.

She told the court his cocaine use had been causing him auditory hallucinations. “So extreme was this addiction it led to him not eating, not sleeping and to feelings of uncontrollable rage,” she said.

Ms Owen added that Green has mental health problems and is waiting to see a psychiatrist.

Sentencing

Green received:

  • Three years and nine months for coercive and controlling behaviour
  • Two years and three months for intentional strangulation, to run concurrently
  • Eight months for breaching the DAPO, to run consecutively
  • No separate penalty for criminal damage

That makes a total of four years and five months. He will serve up to half in custody before being released on licence.

To protect the victim, the judge imposed a new DAPO that will last for 10 years. Green was also made subject to restraining orders that bar him from contacting her parents for the next 10 years.
