A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 28 weeks in prison after admitting he made a phone call to the police non-emergency 101 number that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.

The offence

Richard McLoughlin, of Caerleon Road, Newport, pleaded guilty at Newport Magistrates’ Court to an offence under the Communications Act 2003 relating to the call, which took place on August 27, 2025.

The court heard that McLoughlin had previously received a suspended prison sentence for what was described as an “identical” matter – meaning the latest offence also placed him in breach of that earlier suspended sentence.

Additional charge

McLoughlin also admitted a charge of criminal damage after a wing mirror worth £160 was damaged on November 27, 2025.

Sentence

He was jailed for a total of 28 weeks.
