A man who strangled a woman has been sent to prison after admitting the offence on the day his trial was due to begin.

Daniel Jenkins, 33, from Blackwood, carried out the attack in the town on September 27 last year.

The case

Prosecutor Sol Hartley outlined the details of the assault to Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

Jeffrey Jones, representing Jenkins, told the court that his client’s strongest mitigation was his guilty plea.

Sentencing

Judge Lucy Crowther told Jenkins: “You have a very bad record for violence indeed. This was a frightening experience for your victim and a serious assault.”

The court heard that Jenkins, of no fixed abode, had also breached a suspended prison sentence through his offending.

He was handed 14 months in prison for the strangulation, along with a consecutive three-month term for the breach – making a total sentence of 17 months. ⚖️

Jenkins is expected to serve around 40 per cent of the sentence behind bars before being released on licence.

He was also made the subject of a three-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim, and must pay a victim surcharge.
