A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after police found him with a knife on a city centre street in Newport.

Fathal Moshen was arrested by officers on Bolt Street in the Pill area of the city on January 7 after he was discovered carrying a Santoku kitchen knife in public.

Trial and conviction

Moshen, of Alexander Road, Pill, Newport, stood trial and was found guilty of possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Sentencing

He then failed to appear at Newport Magistrates’ Court for sentencing, prompting District Judge Sophie Toms to deal with the case in his absence.

She handed Moshen an eight-month prison sentence and issued a warrant for his arrest. The judge also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the knife, along with £150 in costs.
