A woman has been locked up for 34 weeks after going on a shoplifting binge targeting high street stores.

Sophia Hoppis, 38, of Fairfield Road, Caerleon, Newport, appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court where she pleaded guilty to a string of theft offences.

The offences

On January 20, Hoppis went on a single-day crime spree across multiple shops in Hereford, stealing bags and cosmetics worth £450 from TK Maxx, perfume and gift sets valued at £447 from Boots, bras and a coat worth £200 from Marks & Spencer, a hat from H&M, and a bag from River Island.

She then stole alcohol worth £97.50 from Waitrose in Monmouth on March 10.

The total value of goods taken ran into more than £1,000, though all items were recovered.

Previous offending

The court heard the offences were committed while Hoppis was subject to a suspended prison sentence for similar crimes.

She had previously been jailed for 34 weeks after stealing alcohol worth more than £1,000 during a spate of thefts from supermarkets in Newport, Cwmbran and Chepstow.

Sentence

Hoppis was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison. She was not ordered to pay compensation as all stolen goods were recovered and there was no loss or damage.
