Barry thief jailed for shoplifting and NHS guard assault

A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to more than seven months in prison after admitting to shoplifting from two Barry stores and assaulting an NHS security guard.

Michael Sparks, of no fixed abode, appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court facing two separate sets of charges.

The thefts

On 1 July last year, Sparks stole cooked meats worth £7.75 from the Co-op on Colcot Road in Barry. The very next day, he took eight cans of Kronenbourg 1664 – valued at £11.78 – from Home Bargains.

The assaults

Sparks was also charged in connection with two assaults in Cardiff on 25 February this year. He was accused of assaulting a man and attacking an NHS security guard who was acting in the execution of their duties.

Sentence ⚖️

Sparks pleaded guilty to assault by beating of an emergency worker, common assault, and two counts of shoplifting.

He was jailed for a total of 32 weeks.

Sparks was also ordered to pay £150 in compensation to the NHS security guard, £11.78 to Home Bargains, and £7.75 to Co-op.
