A drug dealer who smashed into a car while riding an off-road bike through Barry has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.
Lee Dickenson, 23, of no fixed abode, was riding the bike on the evening of March 15 when he failed to stop at a T-junction on St Mary’s Avenue, colliding with a Ford Kuga driven by a woman at the junction.
The crash
An off-duty paramedic rushed to help the injured Dickenson, but he got to his feet, apologised, and told the paramedic: “I can’t stay. I can’t go back to jail.”
He then fled the scene before police arrived – but left behind a bag containing a quantity of crack cocaine.
Hospital arrest
Dickenson later attended the emergency department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where officers tracked him down and arrested him.
Police seized £120 in cash and his mobile phone. He gave no comment answers during his interview.
Sentencing
Dickenson admitted possession with intent to supply crack cocaine, careless driving, and driving without a licence or insurance at Cardiff Crown Court. The court heard he had four previous convictions.
William Bebb, in mitigation, said: “He understands the severity of his position.”
Mr Bebb added that Dickenson had “demonstrated a degree of insight” into his offending, and that a prospective job was open to him upon his release.
Recorder Christian Jowett sentenced Dickenson to two years and four months’ imprisonment, of which he will serve up to half in custody. He was also disqualified from driving for three years.
