Jake Royle, 23, has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to a string of thefts from shops in Barry, Penarth and Cardiff.
Royle appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court where he admitted carrying out the offences over several weeks during March, April and May, taking hundreds of pounds worth of goods from high street stores and supermarkets.
The thefts
The 23-year-old targeted a range of retailers across the three towns, stealing items including alcohol, food, cosmetics, electrical products and toys.
Among the higher-value offences, he stole electrical and cosmetic items worth £206.29 from Boots on Holton Road in Barry. He also took legs of lamb valued at £183.28 from Asda and beef joints worth £180 from Tesco in Penarth.
One Stop on Broad Street in Barry was targeted on multiple occasions. On May 4, Royle stole alcohol worth £70.78 from the store, and returned on other dates to take more alcohol along with football trading cards and stickers.
His offending also included the theft of perfume from Boots, toys from Asda and cleaning products from Heron Foods.
Aggravating factors
Royle additionally pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to court bail on April 30.
The court heard his offending was made more serious by the fact he committed the thefts while on bail and subject to an existing court order. His previous criminal record and the volume of offences were also treated as aggravating factors.
He was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment.
