A 19-year-old from Newport who repeatedly ignored opportunities to comply with community orders and continued breaking the law while on bail has been sent to a young offender institution for 16 weeks.

Nathan Curley, of no fixed abode, admitted a string of offences when he appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court.

The offences

On March 21, Curley stole a Montirex jacket and pair of trousers worth a combined £130 from JD Sports in Newport.

He then stole an iPhone from a woman in the city on June 5.

Curley also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and two separate breaches of his bail conditions.

Sentencing

The court heard that Curley had failed to engage with community-based interventions and had carried on offending while released on bail, leaving magistrates with little alternative but to impose a custodial sentence.

He was detained for 16 weeks at a young offender institution.

An order was also made for the cannabis seized by police to be forfeited and destroyed.
