A 44-year-old Caerphilly man has been sentenced to six weeks in prison after pleading guilty to fraud at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 28.
The scam
Between 13 and 15 September 2025, Jonathan Sterry knocked on doors along School Road in Maesteg, asking residents for cash donations and claiming to represent a cancer charity.
The investigation
South Wales Police received multiple reports about the activity and launched an investigation. Officers established that Sterry held no valid identification or permit to carry out charitable collections, and could not demonstrate any connection to a registered charity.
Sentencing
Sterry was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment for fraud.
Neighbourhood Support Team Sergeant Joshua Darra-Edwards said: “This was a thorough investigation run by our neighbourhood policing teams, people in our community deserve to feel safe without having to worry about cold callers.”
