🚨 Three teachers were assaulted at Newport High School yesterday after a former pupil broke into the premises, with one teacher requiring hospital treatment.

The incident occurred on January 7 when a former key stage three pupil entered the school grounds, causing damage to school property and vehicles before attacking the staff members.

Newport High School immediately implemented lockdown procedures to ensure student safety. Two teachers sustained minor injuries, while a third was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Newport City Council and Newport High School said: “Following an incident when a former key stage three pupil came onto the school site, staff instigated its emergency procedures to ensure the safety of pupils. This included a lockdown procedure towards the end of the school day. Police attended and supported the school. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on the details on the incident, but it was extremely upsetting for both staff and pupils, particularly those who witnessed the incident. We are aware of a rumour that a knife was involved but at this stage we have no evidence that was the case and can confirm that no weapons were used. We take school safety very seriously and, have a range of measures in place, but a review is being carried out to see if any further precautions could be taken.”

A Gwent Police spokesperson confirmed: “We received a report that an ex-pupil of Newport High School attended the school yesterday (Tuesday 7 January) and reportedly caused damage to school property, cars and assaulted three teachers. Two teachers received minor injuries and the third attended hospital as a precaution. Enquiries are ongoing.”
