An 11-year-old boy from Pontypool has been hailed a “superhero” by his mum after saving his two-year-old sister from a rogue firework at a Bonfire Night display in Torfaen.
Olly pushed little Daisy out of harm’s way when a firework toppled over and flew straight towards a crowd. The firework landed in his hood, causing burns to his head, neck, and hands. He needed hospital treatment and remained overnight but is expected to recover “quite quickly”.
His mum Charlotte Baggot described how everyone “started running” while Olly “shouted ‘run’ to his brother and then spun his little sister around and pushed her towards me”.
Charlotte and others “ripped his coat off” after the firework landed in his hood. She told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast: “He’s very protective over his little sister.”
Charlotte said his injuries were “not as bad as first thought” and the “freak accident… happened so quickly”.
“It went in slow motion but so fast at the same time. It’s all a bit of a blur,” she said.
She described Olly as a “genuinely lovely boy” and added: “I don’t think he realises what a great thing he’s done. It just came so naturally to him. He’s just so brave. I’m so glad it wasn’t worse than what it is. I do think he’s a little superhero, I really do.”
