A Rogiet woman has appeared in court after being caught watching television without a valid licence.
Megan Louise Jones, 24, from Slade View in Rogiet near Caldicot, faced prosecution by TV Licensing at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. She was handed a £60 fine, but the financial penalty didn’t stop there – she must also cover their £120 legal costs plus a £24 statutory victim surcharge, bringing her total bill to £204.
TV Licensing explained their enforcement approach on their website, stating: “We inform people of the need to buy a TV licence. We send licence renewal letters and we process queries, applications and payments.”
The organisation added: “We also maintain a database of licensed and unlicensed addresses in the UK and use this technology to identify and visit people we believe may be using TV receiving equipment without a valid licence.”
For those wondering about the cost of staying legal, a TV licence can be paid monthly at £14.54 via Direct Debit, or as a one-off payment of £174.50 – significantly cheaper than facing court action.
