A Newport woman has been jailed after pleading guilty to stealing alcohol worth more than £1,000 during a month-long shoplifting spree across Gwent supermarkets 🚨
Sophia Hoppis, 37, of Moorland Park, Newport, targeted stores including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons in Newport, Cwmbran and Chepstow between February 16 and March 16.
Newport Magistrates’ Court heard that Hoppis, who has previous convictions for similar offences, also stole a £350 air fryer, baby formula and meat during the crime spree.
Prosecutor Catherine Markowski told the court there had been “an element of planning involved” in the thefts, which included:
- Baby formula worth £28 from Tesco, Rogerstone (Feb 16)
- Air fryer worth £350 from Tesco, Spytty Road (Feb 19)
- Alcohol worth £150 from Tesco in Newport (Feb 20)
- Alcohol valued at £304 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran (Mar 4)
- Alcohol worth £275 from Tesco in Chepstow (Mar 7)
- Alcohol valued at £288 from Tesco in Chepstow (Mar 8)
- Alcohol of a value unknown from Morrisons in Newport (Mar 11)
- Alcohol worth £149 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran (Mar 11)
- Alcohol and meat from Marks & Spencer in Newport (Mar 14)
- Alcohol and meat worth £135 from Marks & Spencer in Newport (Mar 16)
Hoppis was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison and ordered to pay compensation following her release from custody. 💰
