A 33-year-old with no settled address has been sent to prison for 12 weeks after admitting two thefts in Monmouthshire and failing to turn up at court while on bail.
The Caldicot theft
Scott Thomas took a Ring doorbell in Caldicot on October 19 last year. Newport Magistrates’ Court heard he later pleaded guilty to the offence.
Missing his court date
Thomas had been released on bail and was due back before the same bench on March 20. He did not attend, and admitted a further charge of failing to surrender to custody.
The Chepstow theft
Weeks later, on April 29, he stole a circular saw valued at £30 from the Lidl store in Chepstow – a third matter he also admitted.
What the court was told
Magistrates heard the case involved a “disregard for court orders, previous convictions and the offences were committed on a conditional discharge and community order”.
Sentencing
Thomas was jailed for 12 weeks. He must also pay compensation of £80 over the stolen doorbell and £30 to Lidl for the saw, bringing the total to £110.
