A 47-year-old man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after he admitted possessing more than 300 prohibited images of a child.
The offence
Dean Smith, of no fixed abode, Llanhilleth, pleaded guilty to a single count of possession of 309 prohibited images of a child. The offence took place on May 9, 2024.
Sentencing
Appearing at Newport Magistrates’ Court, Smith was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 18 months – meaning he will not serve time behind bars unless he breaches the terms of the order.
He was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, attend a 26-day accredited programme, and complete a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
Smith was made the subject of a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. He must also pay a £154 surcharge and £85 in costs.
