A Cardiff man has been given a suspended sentence after carrying out horrific attacks on his pregnant partner, including strangling her and lifting her off the ground by her throat until she saw “black spots” and thought he was “going to murder her”. 😠⚖️
Callum Coate, 26, of Handley Road, Splott, carried out violent attacks on his partner throughout 2024, with his abuse continuing after their child was born. The violence was fuelled by jealousy and his demands for money to buy cannabis.
Cardiff Crown Court heard on Thursday how the victim endured months of controlling behaviour, with Coate sending up to 50 texts and making 10 calls in short periods, calling her “slag” and “slut” whilst accusing her of infidelity.
The court heard details of four separate violent incidents:
- February 2024: Coate smashed up her home before grabbing her throat with both hands
- May 2024: When 10 weeks pregnant, he punched her chest and kneed her stomach
- October 2024: He punched her and strangled her, leaving marks on her neck
- February 2025: The final attack saw him lift her by the throat against a wall until she passed out
In her victim statement, the woman said: “Since I have reported the incident I have felt constantly on edge and find myself looking out of the window to make sure he’s not outside. I have been doing this day and night and fear he’s going to return to my property.”
She added: “Every time I go to sleep I see Coate as if he was there. I have night terrors and wake up very upset and gasping for air as if I am still being strangled by Coate.”
Judge Paul Hobson told Coate: “You were violent and threatening towards her, she didn’t deserve to be treated like this.”
Coate pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour, three counts of intentional strangulation, and assault occasioning ABH. He was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months.
