A Wrexham man has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing “abhorrent” child abuse images, including footage of babies being sexually abused. 😡
Darrell Evans, 36, of Hampsons Grove, Wrexham, was jailed for 18 months at Mold Crown Court after being convicted of making indecent images of children. He received an additional one-month sentence for failing to appear in court.
The court heard that police seized Evans’ iPhone during a search of his home in June 2021. He initially refused to provide his PIN, claiming it contained “personal stuff” that police “did not need to see” and denied having any indecent images on the device.
However, forensic analysis revealed the phone contained 421 category A images (the most serious), including 82 videos, 451 category B images, and 698 category C images, along with approximately 2,000 additional files indicative of sexual images of children.
When confronted with the evidence during police interview, Evans told officers to “f*** off” and “Shut the f*** up. I’ve had enough.”
His Honour Judge Niclas Parry told Evans during sentencing: “These things that you were watching were actually happening to children. It was not a play, it was not a drama.”
The judge noted that the images included young children, including a baby aged between 12 to 18 months, with some victims being tied up and sexually abused.
In addition to the prison sentence, Evans was given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order to control his internet use.
Defence counsel Simon Rogers acknowledged that an immediate custodial sentence was inevitable, noting that Evans suffers from slipped discs and a trapped nerve in his back, which will make serving his prison term difficult.
