A man who raped one girl and sexually assaulted another has been jailed for a total of 15 years. Kevin Neil Jones targeted two victims – one a young girl and an older teenage girl.
A jury at Mold Crown Court convicted the 41-year-old of six offences last month. Today a judge said he had shown no remorse but his crimes had had a serious effect on the young victims.
The court heard Jones, of Bryneglwys Road, Wrexham, committed five offences – including two rapes – against one girl, who cannot be identified, aged less than 13 years old. He committed a sixth offence against an older teenager, aged less than 18 years old.
The first victim, who was under 13, said in a statement she used to be happy and giggly. She can still be like that but also feels numb and cries. She said after her ordeal: “I got thoughts of ending my life, thinking ‘Why should I be here?’ It’s a battle fighting these thoughts.”
At school she felt “disgusted and ashamed”. At night she has nightmares about the perpetrator “chasing me with a knife” and was too scared to fall asleep.
Jones’ second victim said in a statement she also felt ashamed. She took to alcohol and drugs “to help her forget about everything and make it all numb”, she said. But she is rebuilding her life and her partner has helped her get through it all.
Duncan Bould, defending, said Jones comes from a “close knit and, in part, supportive family”. He had helped some relatives to gain employment, he added.
But the judge His Honour Rhys Rowlands told Jones his offending had been “shameful”. He had taken advantage of his two victims “to satisfy your own sexual needs” in a “depraved course of conduct”. His behaviour had been “sordid” and “without a thought as to their welfare, feelings or harm”, he added. He has shown no remorse.
“It’s a concern that you have little insight into the harm you have caused…your denials and minimisation of what you did do concern the court.”
He jailed Jones for 14 years for each count of rape, with one concurrent, and ten years each for two counts of assault by penetration, with both to run concurrently. There was also a 12-month consecutive jail term for sexually assaulting the older girl, making a total of 15 years immediate imprisonment.
The judge imposed an indefinite restraining order prohibiting Jones from contacting his victims and a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) to run until further order. He must also register as a sex offender indefinitely.
