Seven horses, including three mares and four foals, have been safely removed from Gelligaer and Merthyr Common following welfare concerns.

A collaborative rescue effort on Friday 31 January involved multiple organisations including RSPCA Cymru, Caerphilly County Borough Council, Redwings, The British Horse Society, The Donkey Sanctuary and World Horse Welfare.

RSPCA Inspector Christine McNeil said: “These seven equines – two bay mares and their chestnut foals, a chestnut foal and a chestnut mare and foal – were taken into possession by Caerphilly County Borough Council under the Animal Welfare Act.”

“These ponies have now been taken into charitable care where they are receiving the appropriate veterinary treatment.”

“As ever we would like to thank our equine charity partners along with the local authority for their time, expertise and efforts.”

The search is now on to locate the owners. “We don’t know who these ponies belong to so we’re issuing an appeal to help with enquiries,” added Inspector McNeil.
