A 68-year-old Carmarthenshire man has been jailed for two years after a judge told him a vulnerable teenager had no idea his offer of help was driven by sexual attraction towards her.

The encounter

Swansea Crown Court heard that Nigel Page crossed paths with the heavily intoxicated girl in Carmarthen town centre one evening in August last year. She needed somewhere to charge her phone, and Page offered to take her back to his home – presenting himself as a good samaritan.

The attack

But once inside the property, Page stripped off his clothing and changed into a pair of stockings and a thong. He then pushed the teenager to the floor, kissed her, and rubbed his crotch against her stomach before sexually assaulting her.

Fearing she was about to be raped, the girl managed to escape the house and flagged down a passing motorist who gave her a lift back into town. Page also left the property and headed back into Carmarthen to search for the teenager, though his reason for doing so was never established.

Defence arguments

Page, of Ger-y-Capel, Llangain, Carmarthen, had been found guilty of one count of sexual assault following a trial.

His representative Dyfed Thomas told the court that a mental health disorder had played a role in what he described as Page’s “irrational and bizarre” behaviour that night.

Sentencing

Sending him down, Judge Catherine Richards said the victim had been in “no position to make sensible choices” and had not realised Page’s true intentions when he offered his help.

She said it was evident from the trial and background material that Page lacked any genuine insight into his own conduct and had been refusing to take his mental health medication.

Given the erratic way Page had behaved throughout the evening, the judge said she was satisfied there had been an “ulterior motive” behind his decision to go looking for the girl after she fled.

Page was jailed for two years and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
