A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual offences committed against a child more than three decades ago.
Phillip Harris, of Merthyr, appeared at Newport Crown Court on Friday, April 17, where he was handed the lengthy custodial term.
The offences
The crimes took place between 1989 and 1991 when the victim was a child. He is now in his late 40s.
Harris faced a total of six counts of indecent assault of a boy under 16, five counts of gross indecency of a boy under 14, committing buggery to a boy under 16, three counts of making indecent images of a child, and possessing an extreme pornographic image of a child.
He admitted the majority of the charges but denied one count of indecently assaulting a boy under 16 and one count of gross indecency of a boy under 14. He was found guilty of both following a trial in March 2026.
The investigation
The victim came forward to South Wales Police in 2023 after confiding in his partner about the abuse he had suffered as a child.
Harris was arrested and officers searched his home while he was in custody. A number of devices were seized, from which indecent images were recovered, including Category A images – the most serious classification.
Victim’s words
In his impact statement, the victim described feeling “trapped by the memories and trapped by the constant, gnawing sense of loss”. He told the court that Harris had taken something from him he could never reclaim – his childhood.
Sentence and orders
Alongside the 15-year prison sentence, Harris was made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be required to register as a sex offender.
Police response
Detective Constable Leah Williams, who led the investigation, said: “I would like to commend the bravery of the victim in this case who was taken through a difficult trial process by a man who preyed on him as a child.
“Whilst the trauma of the experience all those years ago remain with him, I hope the justice he now has allows him to take important steps forward in his life.
“This case demonstrates that it is never too late to report a crime of this nature. We take all reports seriously and investigate them thoroughly, with the aim of securing justice for victims.”
