A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to a year and six months in prison after he assaulted a victim, brandished a knife and threatened police officers during a violent episode at a property in Merthyr Tydfil.

Samuel Price, of Merthyr Tydfil, pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court today (Tuesday, April 14) to five charges – assault by beating, threatening a person with an offensive weapon/bladed article, criminal damage, threat to destroy property and causing a public nuisance.

The assault

On January 19, police were called to a disturbance at an address in Merthyr Tydfil. When officers arrived, the victim disclosed that Price had picked them up and pushed them against a wall. Price was then seen standing in the doorway of the property holding a knife.

Threats to officers

Price became immediately hostile towards the responding officers, threatening to throw a television and a microwave at them, as well as threatening to throw boiling water over them. Officers could hear him smashing numerous items inside the property.

When Price re-entered the doorway, officers made the decision to deploy a Taser before placing him under arrest.

Sentencing

PC Ffion Hiscutt said: “This was a very distressing event for the victim. The officers who attended the scene had to deal with a threatening and volatile individual.

“Price is now serving a prison sentence which I hope will give him time to reflect on his actions.”
