A nun who dedicated 67 years to religious life has died after being struck by a car in Newport.
The collision
Gwent Police were called to Stow Park Avenue at around 3.55pm on Tuesday 24 February following a collision involving a pedestrian and a car.
The pedestrian, an 87-year-old woman from Newport, was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her next of kin have been informed.
Sister Genevieve
She has now been named as Sister Genevieve, previously Anne Clanchy, a sister of St. Joseph of Annecy.
Sister Genevieve spent much of her career in education, including many years leading St. Winifred’s School, Lee, in South London. After retiring, she returned to her home area of Chatham in Kent before later moving to Devizes in Wiltshire, where she became an active part of parish life and made many friends.
In recent years she had been living in Newport and continued to connect with others through local groups she joined.
Tribute
In a tribute, her fellow sisters at the convent said:
“She taught in various schools in the English Province, spending many years as head of St. Winifred’s School, Lee, in South London.
“In retirement, Sister Genevieve returned to her home area of Chatham in Kent and later moved to Devizes in Wiltshire.
“There she enjoyed being part of so many parish activities, making many friends.
“In recent years she had been living in Newport and continued to reach out to others through the local groups that she joined.
“Sister Genevieve’s sudden death is a shock to the sisters and all those who knew her.
“She will be remembered for her great kindness to everyone that she met, her interest in them and their lives, her love of life and her quiet, deep faith.”
The sisters have kindly asked for privacy at this time.
