A Newport man has been sentenced to 40 weeks in prison after targeting The Riverfront theatre and several businesses across the city.

Adam Matthews, 42, stole a laptop, chargers and tools from The Riverfront theatre and arts centre during a series of offences between October and November 2024. His crime spree also included burgling a Timpson store and thefts from multiple retailers, including a £120 toy from Nerd Nook in Cwmbran.

District Judge Sophie Toms handed down the prison sentence at Newport Magistrates’ Court, citing Matthews’ previous record and “non-compliance with a community order”. The court heard there was “no realistic prospect of rehabilitation” in his case.

Matthews, of Colston Place, pleaded guilty to burglary, burglary with intent to steal and three shoplifting offences. He will be required to pay compensation to his victims. 🧑‍⚖️

The defendant was previously imprisoned for two years in 2021 for a racist attack on a shopkeeper.
