A Swansea man with no previous convictions has been jailed for 30 months after being found asleep in his car with a heroin dealer’s kit beside him.

Jason Grove, 34, of Lon Camlad, Morriston, was discovered by police in Honeysuckle Drive in the Clase area of Swansea on 3rd June last year after officers received calls about a suspected intoxicated male in a vehicle at 8am.

Swansea Crown Court heard that when officers arrived, they found Grove asleep in the car with the driver’s door open. They banged on the windows and called to wake him up.

When searched, Grove told officers about powder found in his pocket: “It’s not Class A. It’s amphetamine”.

A search of the car uncovered a lock-knife in the centre console and a “small silver case” on the passenger seat. Inside the case were three individual wraps of heroin, a 93g block of heroin, weighing scales, and silver foil.

The court heard Grove had “masked his grief with controlled substances” following his grandmother’s death. His defence barrister, Andrew Evans, said it had been a “traumatic few years” for the defendant and that at the beginning of 2025 there had been a significant deterioration in his mental health.

Grove pleaded guilty to possession of heroin with intent to supply on the first day of trial, as well as possession of a bladed article and simple possession of amphetamine.

Recorder Victoria Hillier said the defendant had a block of heroin big enough to make 54 individual deals along with “the means to measure and prepare deals” in his car.

With a 10% discount for his guilty plea, Grove was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
