A 30-year-old man from Monmouth has been sentenced to eight months in prison after pleading guilty to 13 counts of shoplifting across the town.

Ryan Price appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Monday 20 April, where he admitted the offences.

Two-year ban

Alongside the custodial sentence, Price was handed a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) prohibiting him from entering five named businesses in Monmouth:

  • Co-op, Rockfield Road
  • Marks & Spencer, Monnow Street
  • Overmonnow Garage, Cinderhill Street
  • Iceland, Agincourt Square
  • Waitrose

The order remains in force until 20 April 2028. Any breach constitutes a criminal offence and could result in arrest, a fine, further imprisonment, or both.

Community impact

PC Tom Evans, Crime and Disorder Reduction Officer from the Monmouthshire neighbourhood policing team, said the order reflected concerns raised by local businesses.

“I want to reassure businesses and residents in Monmouth that we are listening to your concerns,” he said.

“I’ve worked with our partners to secure this two-year CBO and I know it will be welcomed by businesses in the town affected by Price’s criminality.

“Theft is not a victimless crime; the impact of this type of offence is hugely felt by our communities, notably businesses and retailers.

“Price’s chaotic lifestyle has led to his offending, and we know this sentence and order will be welcomed by those businesses affected.

“Part of our work to tackle theft includes providing crime prevention advice to business owners and it is crucial that anyone who is affected by theft, reports it to us so we can continue to target those, like Price, who make life a misery for business owners and their staff.”

Anyone who witnesses Price breaching his CBO can contact Gwent Police via their website, by calling 101, or by sending a direct message on Facebook or X.
