A repeat offender who went on a shoplifting spree at businesses in Merthyr Tydfil has been locked up for half a year.

Sentencing

Sean Evans, 44, of Merthyr Tydfil, was handed a six-month prison sentence at Merthyr Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 13, 2026, after admitting to a string of retail thefts.

Persistent offending

Evans had been released from prison only a short time before the latest offences, having previously served time for similar crimes. Despite that earlier stint behind bars, he continued to target shops on the Pengarnddu Industrial Estate, with Asda and B&M among the businesses affected by his persistent stealing.

The arrest

Officers from the Merthyr and Cynon Neighbourhood Support Team tracked Evans down and detained him in connection with the repeated thefts.

Police response

PC Benjamin Woolley from the Neighbourhood Support Team said: “Individuals like Evans cause significant and ongoing harm to local businesses through persistent reoffending, placing unnecessary strain on shopworkers, business owners, and the wider community.”

He added: “We remain committed to identifying, targeting, and pursuing those responsible for this type of behaviour, and will continue taking robust action against repeat offenders like Evans to help protect businesses and maintain the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
