A 30-year-old man who repeatedly targeted shops on a Merthyr Tydfil industrial estate has been handed an 11-month prison sentence, with an accompanying order that bars him from setting foot on the site again.

Daniel Giles, of Merthyr Tydfil, was sentenced at Merthyr Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, April 15, following an investigation led by the town’s neighbourhood policing team.

The offending

Giles had become a persistent presence at businesses on the Pengarnddu Industrial Estate, where his repeated offending caused significant disruption to shops, staff and the wider community. South Wales Police said his conduct went beyond anti-social behaviour and had a real financial and emotional toll on those working at the affected premises.

Banned from the estate

Alongside the custodial sentence, Giles was issued with a Community Protection Notice under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. The Notice prohibits him from:

  • Entering Pengarnddu Industrial Estate, Dowlais Top
  • Entering any retail premises on the estate, including ASDA and B&M, whether alone or in the company of others
  • Loitering in, remaining at or attempting to access the car parks, loading areas or surrounding land connected to any retail unit on the estate

Police response

🔵 Police Constable Ashton Riden, of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “We are working with retailers and local businesses throughout Merthyr Tydfil and Cynon to safeguard them from crime and anti‑social behaviour caused by individuals such as Giles.

“Offences against retail premises are far from victimless — they have a serious effect on shopworkers and business owners, often resulting in financial loss, fear, and intimidation and we will take firm action to restore the trust and confidence in policing in our communities.”

🔵 Police Sergeant Gareth Jones, also of the Safer Neighbourhood Team, added: “This is a testament to the hard work of our team, and it does not stop here. We will continue working alongside retailers and communities to ensure offenders like Giles are brought before the courts.”
