A Cwmbran man has been sentenced to prison after a terrifying assault on his former girlfriend, during which he strangled her and threatened to take her life.
Corey Webb, 28, of Stour Court, Thornhill, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
The court heard how Webb, who was intoxicated at the time, attacked his ex-partner in her home. Prosecutor Sol Hartley detailed the assault, stating: “He started to push her around before he grabbed her by the hair and threw her to the floor. The defendant, asked her, ‘You think I won’t kill you?’ He then pinned her down and started to strangle her.”
The victim, who required treatment at the Grange University Hospital, later stated: “This moment has changed my life. It makes me physically ill to think about it and I’m embarrassed to tell people what happened. I couldn’t swallow properly for a time.”
She added: “I don’t hate him but I think he genuinely needs help. He had told me that he loved me and cared about me.”
Webb, who has 28 previous offences on his record, was sentenced to 27 months in prison. He will serve half before being released on licence and must pay a £228 surcharge. A five-year restraining order has also been imposed.
