A Cardiff man has been jailed for three years after violently assaulting a woman in two separate attacks while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. 🚨

Neil Lewis, 42, of Ball Road, Llanrumney, was found guilty of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm following a trial at Newport Crown Court, despite denying the charges.

The court heard how Lewis slapped, punched and kicked his victim as she lay on the floor. He also struck her with a remote control, spat at her and attempted to strangle her as she pleaded with him to stop.

In a second assault, Lewis again punched, kicked and slapped the woman, attempted to strangle her, and threatened her with a plugged-in iron.

The victim suffered a gash to her head which was bleeding and required stitches.

During Friday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutor Clare Wilks read a victim personal statement to the court in which the woman described Lewis as “vicious” and said: “I am a shadow of my former self, I feel reclusive and no longer the person I had once been… I’ve had some flashbacks of the incidents which have plagued my mental health and I’ve had difficulty with that.”

The court heard Lewis has previous convictions for offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

Upon sentencing, Judge Daniel Williams noted: “You maintain your innocence.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Lewis was made subject to a restraining order for eight years. ⚖️
