A Barry man has been sentenced to 16 months in prison following multiple assaults on his girlfriend, including strangulation and violent attacks at her home.

Stefan Bjegovic, 42, of Phyllis Street, repeatedly assaulted his partner over three months, with the first incident occurring in December 2023 when he grabbed her throat during a phone call. The victim was forced to bite his thumb to break free from his grip.

Further attacks followed in January and February, including pushing her into a sofa, causing a suspected rib injury, and shoving her into kitchen units after becoming agitated about her walking her dog.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Bjegovic had previous convictions for domestic assaults, battery, harassment, and criminal damage.

“Paranoia and jealously seem to be a problem for you and exacerbated by alcohol. You now recognise that is a problem in your life and you’re working to address it,” Judge John Philpotts said during sentencing.

Bjegovic pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation and two counts of assault by beating. He will serve eight months in custody before being released on licence. ⚖️
