A Swansea man with a history of violence against women has been jailed after repeatedly punching his former partner until she bled profusely from her nose and vomited. 🚨

Ben James, 35, of Brondeg Crescent, assaulted the woman at an address in Swansea in May 2022 after consuming alcohol, Swansea Crown Court heard.

Following the attack, the victim begged to be taken to hospital due to the severity of her injuries. James agreed only on the condition that she lie about the cause, claiming she had fallen and hit her head.

The day after being discharged from Morriston Hospital A&E, James told the woman not to look in the mirror because her injuries were so severe. He later texted her saying: “I know it’s bad. I hate myself for what I’ve done.”

The court heard James has an extensive criminal history, with 17 previous convictions for 23 offences, including eight for violence. This includes previous assaults on women, unlawful wounding in a domestic setting, and attacking a man with a hammer.

The victim didn’t report the assault until January 2023, telling police James had been “beating her up.” When arrested, James answered “no comment” to all questions but later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

During sentencing, Judge Huw Rees told James: “You are a well-built man and she is much slighter than you. You punched her to the floor and while she was on the floor you punched her again and again causing her head to bounce on the floor. This resulted in pain, dizziness, and bruising to both eyes and she vomited repeatedly during the incident… You are a bully to women. You assault them and demean them.” ⚖️

James was sentenced to three years in prison, with half to be served in custody and the remainder on licence. He was also made subject to a restraining order for a minimum of 10 years.
