A violent bully who suffocated his ex-partner while she begged him to stop has been jailed for three years at Newport Crown Court.

Zayyan Khan, 25, from Cardiff, terrorised his victim throughout their three-year relationship, describing himself as “controlling, possessive and jealous”. The couple have a child together.

During one horrific attack, Khan placed his hand over the woman’s mouth while pinching her nose as she sobbed and pleaded with him to leave her alone. He only stopped when he realised he was being filmed.

In another incident, Khan strangled her until she lost consciousness, telling her afterwards that he thought she had died. He chillingly said that if he had killed her, he would “leave and go to Bangladesh”.

The abuse escalated over time – Khan broke the victim’s ribs twice, once by pushing her down stairs and again by punching her injured ribs. He controlled her finances, called her degrading names, and caused her to develop an eating disorder through his verbal abuse.

On 16th March this year, Khan broke into her home and punched her twice in the face and once in the ribs, causing a severe cut to her forehead. At hospital, he video-called friends showing them her wound, saying: “This is what happens when b*****s get cheeky”.

When arrested, Khan initially denied the charges but later pleaded guilty to intentional suffocation, two counts of assault by beating, and engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour.

Judge Daniel Williams told Khan: “The reality is you absolutely have no remorse at all. You feel entitled to exercise control and power over women and the victim in particular. The fact you represent an ongoing danger to her is certainly true.”

Khan, of Clos Dewi Sant, Riverside, Cardiff, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and given an indefinite restraining order. ⚖️
