A jealous and violent man has been jailed after strangling his partner during a holiday in Spain, leaving her unable to breathe.

Shaun Hill attacked his partner while they were in Majorca, choking her to the point where she struggled to breathe and couldn’t get her words out. The victim pleaded with him to stop, but he continued the assault.

The woman later confided in a friend about the attack, and the friend was so concerned that police were contacted.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Hill’s relationship with his partner was initially good, but he soon became jealous and paranoid. He started turning up unannounced when the woman was out with friends and became violent while drunk.

When arrested, Hill denied the allegation in interview. However, the 41-year-old from Philip Drive, Bryntirion, Bridgend County, later pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional strangulation.

With a discount for his guilty pleas, Hill was sentenced to 41 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. A five-year restraining order was also imposed, banning him from contacting his ex-partner.

Speaking after the sentencing, South Wales Police constable Adrien Kiernan said: “Shaun Hill’s behaviour towards his partner was abhorrent and he is now in prison where he can pose no threat to others. The victim in this case spoke to a friend whose intervention marked the beginning of the end of the abuse. Victims of such violence often live in fear but confiding in somebody they trust can help them take an important first step out of a desperate situation, as this case shows. I hope the victim is able to move on and put this traumatic chapter in her life behind her.”
