Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo is grieving the loss of one of their senior residents this week. Libu, a male Barbary Macaque who had been at the zoo since 2008, has passed away, leaving his fans and keepers devastated at the loss of such a ‘huge character’ at the attraction. 💔
Thought to be around 18 years old, Libu originally came to Pembrokeshire as a rescue from the pet trade. The zoo shared: “He arrived with us in 2008 as an infant from the AAP Rescue Centre in Holland after being surrendered from the pet trade. He joined Folly Farm with a group of rescue macaques who all had a difficult start in life. In his later years, he’d spend most of his time with his mate Vivian and fellow female and enclosure roommate Leila, who still reside with us.”
His background as a former pet explained his love for interaction with visitors. “Being an ex-pet, Libu enjoyed lots of attention and would often be seen patrolling his home and interacting with guests. He loved sitting atop the posts within his enclosure and when descending back down, he’d often bang on his legs – a trait to showcase his strength within the group,” the zoo explained.
Libu was known for his distinctive personality and particular preferences. “He had a huge personality and took a little while to warm to new people. Keepers would have to gain his respect by offering several of his favourite food items – which included grapes, nuts and bananas. He could be cheeky at times and has been known to steal items from the keepers such as their target stick during training sessions.”
Despite receiving veterinary care and responding well to treatment, Libu sadly passed away due to heart disease. “He was certainly a huge character and will be sorely missed by the staff and all of the keepers that worked with him. Our thoughts are with them at this time,” the zoo added.
Visitors have shared tributes to Libu, with one saying: “Thank you for rescuing him and giving him a good life.” Another commented they were “absolutely gutted” to hear the sad news, adding: “He was one of the reasons I enjoyed visiting.” 🌈
