Courts across Wales have handed down sentences this week for offences ranging from violent assaults on children to drug dealing and online grooming. Here’s a round-up of the most notable cases from the past seven days.
Luke Jancouski, 39, from Trecynon, has been jailed for 18 months after attacking three 11-year-old children in Aberdare Park in January 2026. He approached the children while they were playing, leaving one with a lost tooth and others with facial injuries. He was identified through CCTV footage.
Marley Burgess, 26, from Cardiff, was jailed for 17 months after subjecting his partner to violent abuse including punching, biting, and throwing a knife at her. He met the victim on social media in 2024 and moved into her home, where the abuse began. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges at Newport Crown Court.
Abdirahman Osman, 44, was jailed for two years after approaching young girls in Roath Park, Cardiff, and asking a 14-year-old to perform a sexual act on him. He was convicted of attempting to incite a child into sexual activity. During sentencing, he swore at the judge and stormed out of the hearing.
Carl Williams, 27, from Anglesey, has been jailed for two years and eight months after breaching a sexual harm prevention order. Williams used Snapchat to contact a young girl, sending her lewd messages despite knowing she was under 16. The judge described him as a “high risk to children.”
Paul Gurney, 33, has been jailed for 18 months after breaking into his ex-partner’s home in Haverfordwest, spitting in her face, and throwing her onto broken glass. Days later, he grabbed her by the throat. Gurney pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage. A five-year restraining order was also imposed.
Jamie Davies, 34, from Port Talbot, has been jailed for 28 months after using Snapchat to groom a 14-year-old boy. Davies offered to cook the child a meal in exchange for sexual acts and sent indecent images. Police also found 40 indecent images of children on his phone.
Cameron Cummings, 28, from Grangetown, Cardiff, ran a drug line from his home, selling cocaine and cannabis. Police raided his property and found over £6,000 worth of drugs, cash, and an offensive weapon. Phone messages revealed he offered a free sample to a customer who complained about drug quality. He was sentenced to 36 months in prison.
Zack Mason, 22, of Port Talbot, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to causing the death of 85-year-old former Neath Port Talbot Council leader Noel Crowley. Mason, an unaccompanied learner driver over the legal cannabis limit, struck Mr Crowley on a pedestrian crossing in December 2024. He was also banned from driving for seven years.
Rodney Roberts, 40, from Cardiff, posed as an American intelligence agent, attorney and TV producer to defraud three women of £49,580 through online dating and social media between 2021 and 2024. He used the fake name Paul Smith to gain their trust and manipulate them into handing over money. Roberts was jailed for five years and one month at Newport Crown Court.
Aled Powell-Jones, 48, of Barmouth, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after attacking his 79-year-old father, who had visited to deliver meals and a cheque. Powell-Jones shoulder-barged and kicked his father, leaving him with a fractured hip requiring surgery. He admitted grievous bodily harm without intent. A 10-year restraining order was also imposed.
Marc Blythin, 44, of Corris, has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for controlling and coercive behaviour towards his former partner. He was found guilty following a trial at Caernarfon Crown Court. A restraining order was also imposed to protect the victim.
Michael Sparks, 45, of no fixed abode, was jailed for 32 weeks after pleading guilty to shoplifting from the Co-op and Home Bargains in Barry, and assaulting an NHS security guard in Cardiff. He was also ordered to pay compensation to his victims.
Joshua Hyett, 29, from Swansea, was caught dealing drugs after a minor car collision in front of police officers. A search of his BMW revealed diazepam, cocaine, cannabis, and cash. Phone messages confirmed six months of drug supply activity. Hyett was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court to 38 months in prison and disqualified from driving for 31 months.
Kyle Jones, 23, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 20 months in prison at Caernarfon Crown Court after admitting threatening a group of young people with a machete in Colwyn Bay. One girl was left outside a locked shop as Jones waved the blade, fearing for her life. Jones had 15 previous convictions for 39 offences.
Kyle Jones, 42, from Morriston, Swansea, was sentenced to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple offences involving indecent images of children and animals. Police linked Jones to a Kik account used to upload the most serious category of illegal material. Over 3,000 illegal images and videos were found across his devices.
Sophia Hoppis, 38, from Newport, was jailed for 34 weeks after a shoplifting spree targeting high street stores including TK Maxx, Boots, and Marks & Spencer. She stole over £1,000 worth of goods across Hereford and Monmouth while subject to a suspended sentence for similar offences. All items were recovered.
